How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes

Paystubs, payslips and payroll reports show hours as decimals: 7.65 hours means 7 hours 39 minutes, not 7 hours 65 minutes.

  1. The whole number is the hours: 7.
  2. Multiply the decimal part by 60 for the minutes: 0.65 × 60 = 39.
  3. If minutes come out with a decimal, multiply that part by 60 for seconds: 7.655 hours is 7 h 39.3 min, and 0.3 × 60 = 18 s.

Minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60

Reading decimal hours on your paystub or payslip

Payroll systems add up your time and then show it in decimal hours, so a week of 42 hours 48 minutes appears as 42.80. Overtime works the same way: 2.80 overtime hours is 2 hours 48 minutes, not 2 hours 80 minutes.

To check a paystub, convert the decimal here, then compare it with your clock-in and clock-out times on the time card calculator. To check the overtime pay itself, use the overtime calculator.

Decimal minutes to minutes and seconds

The same method works one level down. 2.5 minutes is 2 minutes and 0.5 × 60 = 30 seconds. Set the calculator to The number is in: Minutes for this.

When you need to convert decimal hours

  • Reading the hours on a paystub, payslip or payroll report, such as 38.75 regular and 2.80 overtime.
  • Checking a timesheet or time clock export that shows decimals against the hours you remember working.
  • Turning hours billed in tenths of an hour (0.1 = 6 minutes) back into minutes.

In Excel or Google Sheets

If A1 holds decimal hours such as 7.65, divide by 24 to turn it into a time value, and format the cell as [h]:mm:

=A1/24

The square brackets in [h]:mm stop totals over 24 hours from wrapping back to zero.
