How to convert time to decimal hours
Payroll systems, timesheets and invoices usually need hours as a decimal: 7 hours 45 minutes is entered as 7.75. To convert hours to decimal, keep the whole hours and divide the minutes by 60.
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600
For 7:45, that is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 hours. To convert minutes on their own, divide by 60: 90 minutes is 1.50 hours.

Decimal hours are not hours.minutes
7.30 hours is not 7 hours 30 minutes. In decimal hours, the part after the point is a fraction of an hour, not a number of minutes. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50. Writing 7.30 instead pays 12 minutes less.
This is the most common timesheet mistake. A few more: 8 h 20 min is 8.33, not 8.20; 2 h 48 min of overtime is 2.80, not 2.48. If a figure on your paystub or payslip looks too low, convert it back with the decimal to time calculator.
Why a total can be off by 0.01
Many minute values don’t convert to a tidy decimal: 20 minutes is 0.3333… hours. If each day is rounded to 0.33 before adding, seven days come to 2.31 hours, but the real total of 140 minutes is 2.33 hours. When you add several times above, the calculator adds the minutes first and converts once, so the total matches.
Time to decimal in Excel or Google Sheets
If cell A1 holds a time such as 7:45, spreadsheets store it as a fraction of a day. Multiply by 24 and format the result as a number:
=ROUND(A1*24, 2)
If hours and minutes are in separate cells (B1 and C1), use =B1+C1/60. For totals over 24 hours, format the time cells as [h]:mm so they don’t wrap back to zero.
When you need decimal hours
- Entering a week of hours into payroll software that only accepts decimals.
- Filling in a timesheet that asks for hours like 7.75.
- Invoicing from a timer that shows h:mm.
- Working out overtime pay: the overtime calculator takes hours either way.
Have clock-in and clock-out times rather than a duration? Use the hours calculator for one shift or the time card calculator for a week.
Frequently asked questions
What are decimal hours, and why does payroll use them?
Decimal hours write time as one number, where the part after the point is a fraction of an hour: 7.75 hours is 7 hours 45 minutes. Payroll uses them because pay is hours × rate, and only a single number can be multiplied: 7.75 × $20 = $155.00.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
What is 15, 30 and 45 minutes in decimal?
15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes = 0.50 hours and 45 minutes = 0.75 hours.
What are 10, 20, 40 and 50 minutes in decimal?
10 minutes = 0.17 hours, 20 minutes = 0.33 hours, 40 minutes = 0.67 hours and 50 minutes = 0.83 hours, each rounded to two decimals. The chart above lists every minute from 1 to 60.
Is 7.30 hours the same as 7 hours 30 minutes?
No. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours. 7.30 hours is 7 hours 18 minutes, because 0.30 × 60 = 18.
How many decimal places does payroll use?
Most payroll and timesheet systems use two decimal places (hundredths of an hour). Some use four. Check what your system expects; this calculator shows either.
Why doesn’t my total match my payroll system?
If each day is rounded to two decimals before adding, small errors build up. 20 minutes is 0.3333… hours; seven of them is 2.33 hours, but seven rounded values of 0.33 add up to 2.31. Add the minutes first and convert the total once.
How do I convert time to decimal in Excel or Google Sheets?
If A1 holds a time such as 7:45, use =A1*24 and format the result as a number (=ROUND(A1*24, 2) for two decimals). If hours and minutes are in separate cells, use =B1+C1/60.
How do I convert seconds to decimal hours?
Divide the seconds by 3,600 and add the result. 1 hour 30 minutes 45 seconds is 1 + 30 ÷ 60 + 45 ÷ 3,600 = 1.5125 hours.
